Look Back in Anger has its inarguable importance as the beginning of a revolution in the British theatre.
Opening at the Royal Court in Sloane Square, London in 1956, it came to the stage almost a decade after the Second World War. Rationing had only just ended, and a generation was asking itself, ‘What are we going to do now?’
The ‘upper classes’ no longer had much to worry about, but everyone else was struggling to find their way in the world.
The play became an immediately influential expression of the mood of the time: the mood of the ‘angry young man,’ thanks to the critics of the time, Kenneth Tynan and John Russell Taylor and others.
Its themes are no less valid 70 years on; and indeed it has an added relevance to considering how domestic violence may not be as black and white as we always assume.
