The director of Masque’s third production of The Merchant of Venice was brave enough to bring the play into the 20th Century.

Margaret Dickens set it in 1930s Hollywood with Pauline Sawford as the sympathetic Portia, aided and abetted by Ann Greenaway’s delightfully vivacious Nerissa.

Bryan Hall was an authoritative Shylock. John Lott made the most of the Prince of Aragon and Owen Warr’s Old Gobbo was funny and pathetic.

Jane Roebuck’s coffee, cream and gold costumes were a delight.
