Peter Darnell | director

A musical is a new departure for Masque Theatre and I was pleased that I was able to get together a cast of singers and actors who would do the score and libretto justice.

The Hired Man is based on Melvyn Bragg’s stirring novel of rural and industrial working life in Cumbria from the late 19th Century to 1920.

It traces the journey of one family from work on the land, to labouring in the mines, and back to the land.

This piece of musical theatre brings out the passions of the people involved across a cavalcade of British history that is to culminate in a ‘war to end all wars’.

Finally I would to thank all the company involved in this production, onstage and off, for their commitment to the musical.
