An intense study of the effect of the bloody Somme campaign on the women left behind by one of the many 'Pals' battalions of World War I.

The story of one of Kitchener's volunteers 'pals' battalions, raised in 1916 and butchered on the Somme.

It concentrates on the women left at home in Lancashire.
